Sitak advances at French Open

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 26/05/2016

New Zealander Artem Sitak and American doubles partner Nicolas Monroe have won a lengthy battle to reach the second round of the French Open.

Sitak and Monroe downed Russian Teymuraz Gabashvili and Diego Schwartzman of Argentina 4-6 7-6(3) 6-4 in two hours and six minutes.

Sitak said the result was especially pleasing given that Gabashvili, who has a big forehand, is in the third round of the singles and Schwartzman can hit every shot in the book.

Sitak and Monroe face a tough second round encounter against ninth seeds Lukas Kubot (Poland) and Austrian Alexander Peya.

"Tomorrow will be a different match up against doubles specialists, but the good thing is they have just started playing together so we might have an edge," Sitak said.

"But it will come down to execution, who serves better and takes control at the net."

The other New Zealander in doubles action, Marcus Daniell, earlier teamed with American Brian Baker to beat Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis and Russian Dimitri Tursinov 6-3 6-2.

They will face 11th seeds Henri Kontinen (Finland) and Australian John Peers in their second round match late on Friday.
