Kiwi tennis player Artem Sitak has fallen agonisingly short of a finals berth in the ASB Classic doubles, going out in the semi-finals.

The Russian-born Sitak and American partner Nicholas Monroe fell 6-4, 6-4 to Scott Lipsky and Jonathan Erlich in a closely-fought affair.

Broken in the very first game, Sitak and Monroe showed plenty of quick forecourt reflexes but couldn't do enough to break their opposing duo back, losing the set.

Both pairs then held serve in the second set until 2-2, at which point the American and Israeli pairing broke again and went on to serve out the match.

They'll now face either Marcin Matkowski and Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi or Marcelo Demoliner and Kiwi local Marcus Daniell in the final.
