Six people have sought police help to be evacuated from the Clarence River area.

Marlborough Emergency Management Group said it had been asked by the six for assistance to leave and police were looking after the operation.

On Monday afternoon residents near the rivermouth were evacuated from their homes and taken to Blenheim following a surge of water which had built up behind a slip, about 10 to 12kms upriver from the mouth, broke through.

The river had been blocked by a landslide near Dart's Stream after the 7.5-magnitude earthquake that struck just after midnight

There has been significant rainfall overnight.
