Skeletal remains discovered in a gully in the Tararua foothills near Shannon could be that of missing gang member Palmiro "Powser" MacDonald.

Bones were discovered during a police search of the Mangahao Dam area on Monday afternoon after information from a member of the public.

Last month police made a plea for holidaymakers in the area to contact them about the disappearance, and presumed death, of Mr MacDonald who was last seen on March 23.

Mr MacDonald, a 36-year-old father of three, was picked up from his Gardener Street, Levin home by an associate on the day he disappeared.

They visited a garage and a Hokio Beach home.

"He was familiar with this address and this leads police to believe that the people involved in his death are known to Palmiro," it was revealed on Police Ten 7 last month.

That property was burnt to the ground three days later "in what police believe was an attempt to hide evidence", they said.

Police would not confirm the discovery of the remains was connected to their investigation of Mr MacDonald's disappearance.

Instead they said specialist search groups are continuing to examine the scene while a post-mortem is underway to identify the remains.
