Skeletal remains have been found in a car belonging to a man missing seven years, after the vehicle was pulled from Nelson Harbour.

The vehicle was pulled up from Wakefield Quay on Tuesday and police are "confident" it belonged to 19-year-old Leo Lipp-Neighbours, who vanished in 2010.

They now say they have found what they believe to be skeletal remains in the car.

"Identification of these remains will take some time," Inspector Mat Arnold-Kelly said on Wednesday.

He said officers were working closely with Mr Lipp-Neighbours' family and keeping them informed.

Police are now investigating how the car ended up in the water.

Commercial divers located the car on Monday afternoon.

Mr Lipp-Neighbours was last seen with his distinctive orange Toyota Corolla stationwagon in Nelson on January 24, 2010.

Police previously said they believed the disappearance of the then 19-year-old was the result of foul play.
