Scott Skiles has quit as coach of Oralando Magic after just one season with the struggling NBA club.

Scott Skiles has resigned as head coach of the Orlando Magic after just one season, the club announced on Thursday.

Skiles made the decision following some soul-searching after guiding the young Magic to a 35-47 record, a 10-game improvement from the previous season.

"After much thought and careful consideration, I and I alone, have come to the conclusion that I am not the right head coach for this team," he said.

"Therefore, effective immediately, I resign my position as head coach of the Orlando Magic.

"I realise this type of decision can cause much speculation. The reality though is in the first sentence. It is simple and true. Any other rumours are pure conjecture.

"I sincerely apologise for any unintended consequences that may adversely affect anyone associated with this decision."

Magic general manager Rob Hennigan accepted Skiles' decision to step down.

"While we understand it was a challenging season, we reluctantly have accepted Scott's resignation," he said.

"We appreciate Scott instilling a culture of accountability and certainly wish him and his family well."

The Magic will start a search for a new coach immediately.
