Fears captain Winston Reid would miss more New Zealand international matches this month appear to have eased.

West Ham defender Reid hobbled off, gingerly favouring his right leg during the second half of their 2-1 English Premier League loss to Chelsea on Tuesday (NZT).

It sparked immediate suggestions he wouldn't be fit for twin World Cup qualifying matches against Fiji on March 25 (Lautoka) and March 28 (Wellington).

However, several English media reports say Reid suffered a bout of cramp and will be fit for this weekend's fixture against Bournemouth.

The 28-year-old was unavailable for the equivalent international double against New Caledonia in November with a hamstring problem.

He was replaced as skipper by Leeds United striker Chris Wood.

Suspension, injury or unavailability has reduced world class defender Reid's appearances for New Zealand to 21 since his debut in 2010.

He has missed 27 internationals in that time.
