About 850 firefighters and a handful of celebrities are taking on the physical and mental challenge of running up Sky Tower in Auckland.

The annual Firefighter Sky Tower Stair Challenge on Saturday had notched up $1.09 million worth of pledges by Friday, exceeding the target of raising $850,000 for Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand.

Firefighters from around New Zealand are participating in the event alongside firefighters from the US, Australia, and other countries.

One News presenter Wendy Petrie, SkyCity Breakers head coach Paul Henare and members of SkyCity's senior management team are also giving the event a go.

Ms Petrie told New Zealand's Woman's Weekly she was taking part in the fundraising event for her eight-year-old niece, who is battling the disease.
