Slalom paddler changes focus

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 19/06/2016

Callum Gilbert has reset his sights on canoe slalom's junior world championships in Poland next month after another top-30 finish in the ICF World Cup series.

The 20-year-old Bay of Plenty paddler finished 29th in the semi-finals of the latest round in Pau, France, a couple of two-second touches keeping him out of finals contention after clocking 105.66sec.

It was Gilbert's fourth semifinal appearance of his young career, with three coming in the first three rounds of this season.

Rio-bound paddler Luuka Jones will race her K1 semi-final in the women's division late on Sunday (NZT).

Jones had to shrug off a horror first heat to qualify with her second run, finishing sixth to comfortably make the top 10.

Mike Dawson, who will be contesting his second Olympics after finishing 15th in London four years ago, narrowly missed out on the semis after finishing .45sec short of qualifying in his first run and picking up four penalties in his second.
