A major highway in the Bay of Plenty has been closed by a slip as heavy rain washes over the North Island.

State Highway 2 at Waimana Gorge, between Edgecumbe and Opotiki, was blocked by the slip on Friday morning, authorities say.

A detour is in place via Whakatane and Ohope.

Forecasters have warned about heavy rainfall after the leftovers of Cyclone Donna began tracking down New Zealand's east coast, while a low moves in from the Tasman Sea.

MetService has warned the heaviest rains will hit the country's east, with parts of Bay of Plenty and the ranges near Gisborne tipped to receive 150mm to 200mm of rain.

Lower lying parts of Bay of Plenty may receive 80 to 100mm of rain.
