Smeltz to play in Malaysian league

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 12/07/2016

All Whites striker Shane Smeltz is leaving Sydney FC for Malaysian Super League (MSL) side Kedah.

Kedah announced the move on their Facebook page, welcoming the 34-year-old for the rest of the season.

Kedah are fifth after 12 rounds of the 2016 MSL season.

Smeltz has been with Sydney for two years, often being used as a substitute. He scored 12 goals in 43 league matches and one FFA Cup appearance for the Sky Blues.

"I have made a decision to take up an opportunity in Malaysia," Smeltz told the club's website.

"It's something that came about fairly quickly but, as we all know, this is sometime how it works in football."

Making the grand final in his first season would remain in his memory, he said.

Sydney coach Graham Arnold thanked Smeltz for his service to the club and he left with their best wishes.

Smeltz has scored 83 A-League goals in nine seasons, also playing for the Wellington Phoenix, Gold Coast United and Perth Glory.

A recurring foot injury ruled him out of the Oceania Nations Cup beginning in May in Papua New Guinea. Smeltz has scored 24 goals from 51 internationals for New Zealand.
