Smith sets ODI record with Aussies on top

A record-breaking century from skipper Steve Smith has saved Australia's blushes and powered them to a commanding position in their opening one-dayer against New Zealand at the SCG.

Smith's innings of 164, which included 14 fours and four sixes, was the highest ODI score at the SCG, and guided his under-fire side out of early trouble to a strong total of 8-324.

He played with poise when needed and big shots towards the end of the innings before skying Trent Boult into the waiting hands of Colin Munro at mid-wicket.

He passed AB de Villiers' ground ODI record of 162 as he and Matthew Wade (38 off 22) provided some late fireworks to give their side the ascendancy.

The Australians smashed 101 runs off the final eight overs.

Black Caps captain Kane Williamson would have been kicking himself after failing to review an appeal when Smith was hit on the pads by Boult while on 14.

He was given not out lbw but it would have likely been overturned on review.

Wade's swashbuckling innings went a long way to overshadowing any drama whipped up by Glenn Maxwell during the week.

Maxwell, who was left out of Australia's final XI, was fined and reprimanded after criticising Wade's captaincy and decision to bat above him in recent Sheffield Shield games for Victoria.

The Aussies were in early trouble after openers Aaron Finch (0) and David Warner (24) were both out chopping on to their stumps.

When Mitchell Marsh was unluckily run out at the non-striker's end, after Jimmy Neesham deflected a Smith drive on to the stumps catching him out of his crease, the home side were at 4-92 in the 21st over.

Smith and Travis Head (52) put on 127 runs for the fifth wicket before Head was out caught and bowled by Boult (2-51).

The Australians are trying to avoid losing six straight one-dayers for just the second time in their history.
