Smoking car goes into water at Omaha

A smoking car going into water at a beach north of Auckland has prompted an emergency callout - but its owner is nowhere to be found.

Members of the public reported the car's horn constantly going, with smoke coming out of the bonnet at an estuary at Omaha Beach at about 6.30am, a police spokesman said.

The vehicle's windscreen and back window are both smashed in and it has become completely submerged since, due to the rising tide.

Police said it appeared the car had lost control and struck a tree on Broadlands Drive before driving into the water.

The vehicle was empty when emergency services arrived and police say they're now trying to find the owner.
