The New Zealand Police running man challenge that started out with a few bored Auckland officers and turned into a worldwide viral sensation has captured the attention of judges in the New Zealand Social Media Awards.

More than 10 million people tuned in to watch the officers rock out to My Boo by Ghost Town DJ's before setting down the #runningmanchallenge to their colleagues in blue around the world.

Its success was honoured with the Supreme Award at the social media awards in Auckland on Wednesday night.

"We were incredibly humbled by the win," NZ Police public affairs deputy chief executive Karen Jones said.

"More importantly, we are thrilled the campaign reached so many people, and gave them a special glimpse of the wonderful personalities behind the uniform."

The NZ Police Recruitment page, which posted the video, received more than 30 million clicks.

Police around the world rose to the challenge with strong competition from Scotland Police on the bagpipes and Miami Police taking the party to the beach.
