NZ Newswire logoNZ Newswire 21/10/2016

Parts of the eastern North Island are set to start the Labour Weekend holiday sheltering from the rain as downpours are forecast for the region with the chance of thunderstorms.

Rain is expected to become widespread and heavy on Friday afternoon in northern Hawke's Bay and Gisborne and stay that way until easing on Saturday night, according to MetService.

It says between 130mm-160mm is possible during this time but some areas may get more that 200mm.

Severe thunderstorms are deemed a moderate risk in the region with rainfalls of between 25mm-40mm an hour while less intense thunderstorms and possible hail could form in Taihape, Taupo, Bay of Plenty and the rest of Hawke's Bay.
