The family of a soldier found dead on Mount Taranaki say they take comfort in knowing he died doing what he loved.

Police have named the 22-year-old man found dead on the mountain early on Thursday as Morgan Ross Fraser, of Palmerston North.

Mr Fraser was reported missing earlier in the week after failing to return from a climbing trip and his body was later found by Search and Rescue teams.

In a statement, his family said they were heartbroken.

"We're absolutely devastated to lose such an amazing son, brother, grandson, friend and all-round good sort," they said.

"Words can't describe how we feel right now and how much we miss Morgan.

"We take comfort in knowing that he was doing something he loved."

The family thanked police, the army and search and rescue teams for recovering Mr Fraser's body and said funeral arrangements were being made.

The Defence Force confirmed Mr Fraser was a serving member of the army's First Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment.

"Our thoughts, sympathies and support are with his family, friends and comrades at this time," an NZDF spokeswoman said.
