Highlights were in short supply as Lydia Ko made a solid but unspectacular start to the latest LPGA tournament in Irving, Texas.

Playing her first tournament as a 20-year-old, Kiwi world No.1 Ko carded a one-under 70 to share 32nd place at the Volunteers of America Texas Shootout.

The round featured birdies on the 10th and 14th holes, bisected by a bogey at the par-three 11th, leaving Ko five shots off the pace.

Ko, who turned 20 on Monday, is playing her first tournament with English caddie Peter Godfrey.

It is the 10th bagman of Ko's decorated career, having split from South African Gary Matthews immediately after a second place finish at this month's Lotte Championship in Hawaii.

Mi Jung Hur of Korea is the early pace-setter in Texas after opening with a 65, putting her two strokes clear of seven golfers on four-under.

Included in the chasing group is world No.3 Ariya Jutanugarn of Thailand.
