A solo yachtsman who got into trouble off the Bay of Plenty coast is safely back on dry land after being rescued by the Coastguard.

The 55-year-old, believed to be sailing from Auckland to Dunedin, was aboard the 8.8m Windsong when he activated his emergency beacon after his vessel developed steering problems off Mayor Island on Tuesday evening.

A cargo ship was diverted to the scene, but the sailor was reluctant to get too close to the bigger vessel in the dark and with strong winds blowing, a Rescue Coordination Centre of New Zealand spokesman says.

However, the Coastguard was able to rescue the man early on Wednesday morning.

The man was taken back to Tauranga, where the sailor was reported to be tired but unhurt.

The yacht was left out at sea and a navigation warning had been issued.
