More than a 1000 homes in south Auckland's were left without power after a van struck a power pole, closing a busy road.

Emergency services were called to the crash on Porchester Road in Takanini at about 5am on Thursday.

Lines company Vector reported about 1400 homes losing power due to the crash, but that number was down to 290 two hours later.

The remaining homes are expected to be reconnected before 11am.

Police have closed the route between Manuroa Road and Airfield Road to allow for the pole to be replaced and say it's likely to stay closed through the rush-hour peak.

The van driver was not hurt in the crash.
