Gusts of over 120km/h could bring down trees and powerlines, making driving dangerous in Canterbury, coastal Southland and Clutha on Saturday, the MetService has warned.

And up to 200mm of rain is predicted to fall in the ranges of Westland on Sunday, causing already high rivers to rise sharply, posing a risk to trampers.

Fiordland is also expected to get between 100 and 150mm in just 24 hours.

The warnings follow intense thunderstorms and a small tornado in Westland on Thursday and a downpour and winds that prompted some road closures across the south.
