A strong 5.7 magnitude earthquake has struck in the Nelson Lakes.

The quake hit the South Island around 48 kilometres south-east of St Arnaud on Tuesday afternoon at a depth of 65 kilometres.

It was felt throughout New Zealand with more than 250 light and moderate reports coming in from Wellington, Blenheim, the West Coast and Christchurch.

However, the deep quake was not felt in St Arnaud itself, with a spokesman at the Travers-Sabine Lodge saying staff had not noticed anything.

The Fire Service has not received any calls for assistance.
