New Zealand seamer Tim Southee has warmed up for the Test series against Pakistan with a five-wicket bag for Northern Districts on a dramatic opening day of their Plunket Shield match against Canterbury.

Southee took 5-39 and his Black Caps teammate, legspinner Ish Sodhi, claimed 4-39 as Canterbury were skittled for 112 in Hamilton.

An ankle injury ruled Southee out of the 3-0 Test series loss in India but he impressed on return for the ODI series and is set to take the new ball against Pakistan in two home Tests this year.

Earlier on Saturday, Northern Districts were dismissed for 138 on a variable Seddon Park pitch, with international trio Anton Devcich (37), Corey Anderson (35) and Southee (27) top-scoring.

It was more sedate at the two other venues.

Wellington were 278-5 against Auckland, with opener Luke Woodcock continuing his excellent start to the season, unbeaten on 117.

Wicketkeeper Tom Blundell scored 85 in a 139-run fifth-wicket stand against the tiring home attack.

A big partnership in Dunedin lifted Otago from 101-5 to 326-6 by stumps against Central Districts.

Anaru Kitchen (124 not out) and Josh Finnie (98) put on 182 while Test seam bowling hopeful Doug Bracewell claimed 3-58 for the visitors.
