Southern Scallop area again faces closure

NZ Newswire logoNZ Newswire 11/05/2017

Extending the temporary closure of the Southern Scallop fishery at the top of the South Island is on the cards and people are being asked their opinions.

The Ministry for Primary Industries' proposal would take in the entire 2017 season, which runs from July 15 to next February 14.

The fishery includes Golden Bay, Tasman Bay and the Marlborough Sounds.

MPI inshore fisheries manager Steve Halley says a survey in January showed the amount of scallops in the area continues to decline despite last season's closure.

He says some individual scallop beds have stabilised.

"However overall, the fishery, including in the Marlborough Sounds, is close to its lowest recorded levels," he said.

The closing date for submissions to MPI is May 31.
