Southland effluent discharge investigated

NZ Newswire logoNZ Newswire 21/10/2016

A discharge of effluent into a tributary feeding the Winton Stream in Southland is being investigated and health warnings have been issued.

Environment Southland says the significant discharge in the Benmore area will have entered the stream even though work was done to minimise the impact.

It doesn't affect the water supply to residents in Winton where the water is still safe to drink, but people should stay out of the stream and keep dogs away from it.

Environment Southland doesn't expect to give an all-clear until early next week.

Any farmers who draw water from the Winton Stream or its tributaries for stock need to be aware of the risk and make alternative arrangements.

If water is taken from the stream for household use, which is unlikely, it should be boiled.
