A Southland hunter has been winched to safety after spending 24 hours lost in the bush.

The man was rescued by helicopter on Sunday night after being found near Dunsdale Stream in the Hokonui Hills north of Invercargill.

"He is cold and hungry but otherwise fine," said Detective Alun Griffiths.

He urged anyone going into the bush to be suitably equipped for their journey and to carry sufficient navigation and emergency gear.

Thirty people had been searching for the man.
