A woman shot during an incident in Invercargill remains in a serious but stable condition, police say.

The woman, 50, was taken from an Otatara Rd property to Dunedin Hospital with a gunshot wound on Tuesday night.

The shooting sparked an armed offenders squad callout.

Police entered the property on Wednesday morning and found the body of a 29-year-old man, who they said was related to the woman.

The man, whom police named as Kevin Johnston, was suspected to have suffered a self-inflicted injury and his death had been referred to the coroner.

Police said the woman was the only other person injured in the incident.
