Southland is short of working age people and the government hopes it can attract foreign students with families to the region.

Tertiary Education Minister Steven Joyce has announced a $440,000 funding package to promote international education and skills training in Southland.

The aim is to not only bring in an extra 3500 students by 2025, but to increase the number of students and their families settling and remaining in Southland.

"Southland is short of working age people," Mr Joyce said.

"The initiative will focus on attracting adult students with young families to complete post graduate qualifications and take up jobs in the region."
