Spain have clinched the women's hockey series against New Zealand with a game to spare after storming home to win the third Test 3-1 in Barcelona.

The visitors fall 2-0 behind in the tightly-fought four-match series after losing the first game 2-1 and drawing the second 1-1.

For the first time, New Zealand opened the scoring, through a 10th-minute field goal strike from Kelsey Smith.

However, the world No.10 Spanish hit back strongly against the fifth-ranked Black Sticks, firing home to penalty corner goals in quick succession through Lola Riera and Maria Lopez.

Up 2-1 at halftime, Spain extended the lead through Belen Iglesias shortly afterwards.

New Zealand assistant coach Sean Dancer says his side's standards dropped in the face of Spanish pressure.

"Spain played very well today, put us under a lot of pressure and were rewarded for their efforts," he said.

"We need to be better in our next performance and make sure we wrap this series on a positive note."

The fourth Test is on Thursday (NZT).

The series is part of New Zealand's build-up for the World League Semi Final tournament in Brussels starting next week.
