Spain overwhelm NZ at water polo champs

NZ Newswire logoNZ Newswire 13/12/2016

Competition favourites Spain have overwhelmed New Zealand 15-3 at the women's youth water polo world championships in Auckland.

Outstanding work from goalkeeper Antonia Young prevented the margin from becoming even bigger.

The Kiwis must now regroup for their next pool match against Russia, who accounted for Spain 18-6 in their opener.

Coach Davor Carevic says in the preliminary rounds it's hard to know who will deliver, and that New Zealand is still very much in the running.

"Spain is a strong team but surprised with their loss against Russia last night.

"It's not until the work end of the championships that we'll really start to map out which teams have the best chance."
