Telecommunications company Spark has denied rumours it's axing up to 1000 jobs.

NZME on Monday reported staff feared an announcement on the jobs would be made later in the day.

A spokesman for the company told NZ Newswire the rumours the claim was based on weren't correct.

"There is no announcement today," he said, declining to comment on whether anything would be announced later in the week.

But in a follow-up statement, he left open the possibility of some changes going forward.

"We have a consistent policy of not commenting on business decisions that may impact on our staffing numbers in any part of our business," he said.

"But to put things into a broader context, we've discussed on numerous occasions how the technology world in which Spark operates is changing faster than ever before.

"As a consequence, our business has changed enormously in recent years and the one thing we can say for sure is that it will continue to do so."

Between the end of 2015 and the end of 2016, the company's staff numbers grew by about 600 staff to a total 5943.
