`Special day' for prison visits

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 6/05/2016

About 20,000 children have a parent in prison and special efforts are being made to welcome them on Mother's Day.

Corrections Minister Judith Collins says staff have organised a range of activities for visiting children on Sunday.

"Days like Mother's Day can be a very difficult day for them," she said on Friday.

"It's important that we remember the children of prisoners aren't responsible for their parents' offending - they deserve to feel safe, supported and loved."
