Special Olympics team bring home 18 medals

New Zealand's Special Olympics team has come away from the World Winter Games with 18 medals and a haul of personal bests.

The 13-member team returned to New Zealand on Monday from Graz, Austria where they competed in skiing and snowboarding events over five days.

The team took out 13 medals in skiing events and five in snowboarding.

Competition rules mean each competitor is only allowed to compete in two events.

Rebecca Heath and Kaa Dekker came away New Zealand's most successful Olympians, each bringing home a silver and bronze medals.

Michael Holdsworth walked away with two bronze medals in his events.

Sports Minister Jonathan Coleman congratulated the team on their results.

"What's even more impressive is that all members of the team have achieved personal best results," he said.
