'Spectre' Causes A Stir After Shaking UK Box Office Records

The new James Bond flick "Spectre" debuted overseas this weekend and pulled in $80.4 million, including a massive $63.8 million in the U.K. alone. That's more than even "Harry Potter and the Prisoner Of Azkaban," the U.K.'s previous record-holder.

The news may allow Hollywood (or at least Sony, Bond's distributor) to hope that this weekend's painfully flat box office numbers -- the lowest in 2015 and recent memory -- were only a fluke. Three new widely released features proved to be flops: "Burnt," a cooking drama starring Bradley Cooper and Sienna Miller, "Our Brand Is Crisis," a political drama starring Sandra Bullock and "Truth," another political drama with Cate Blanchett and Robert Redford.

More importantly for the rest of us, it means "Spectre" might be worth your pennies. Reviews across the Atlantic have been generally breathless and glowing. The Daily Telegraph called it "a swaggering show of confidence" and The Guardian stated it "pretty much shoots to kill" while The Independent declared,"This is as good as Bond gets."

"Spectre" opens stateside on Friday, Nov. 6.
