Three St John New Zealand medical staff heading to the Silver Fern Rally in Southland are injured after the car they were in crashed.

The accident happened on Puerua Valley Rd on Friday afternoon.

It was initially reported that an ambulance had rolled but St John said the accident involved a car carrying three of its specialist motorsport medical staff who were to provide paramedic cover at the rally.

Derek Liefting, St John assistant director of operations, said all three were injured and one was flown by air ambulance to Dunedin Hospital.

The other two were taken to a local medical centre.

St John is supporting those involved and their families.
