Staff at a Christchurch bakery have been left shaken after being robbed at gunpoint.

Police say three men in black hoodies and balaclavas entered the Buns Bakery on Ferry Road early on Tuesday morning armed with a rifle, a hammer and a bat.

They ordered staff to get onto the ground while trying to get the till and cigarette cabinets open.

It is not clear what the trio managed to get away with when they fled shortly after.

Police say no one was injured, but bakery staff were "very shaken".

The bakery has been cordoned off as officers investigate the scene.
