Stars beat Tactix to notch first win

The Northern Stars have notched the first win in their inaugural season, picking apart the Mainland Tactix 48-37 in Christchurch.

In a clash of two winless teams in the national premiership, the more committed Stars dominated the second spell after leading by just two goals through each of the first two quarters.

The Auckland-based Stars continued to suffocate the Tactix' attack end after the main break but the biggest difference was their own improved fluency, adding 27 goals.

Stars goal keep Sulu Fitzpatrick was a key figure, pulling off four intercepts and three deflections while helping force several other turnovers.

The Tactix shooters had a game to forget. Veteran goal attack Anna Thompson was typically effective around the court but could manage just 16 of 26 shots.

Courtney Tairi was effective at both wing attack and centre for the Stars, improving her connection with shooters Maia Wilson (11/14) and Malia Vaka (19/24) as the match wore on.

The result was a welcome one for the Stars, who lost heavily to both the Southern Steel and Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic in the opening round.

The Tactix opened with a 23-goal loss to the Magic.
