Stars Ellyse Perry and Alex Blackwell return and teenage all-rounder Ashleigh Gardner is making her debut as Australia attempts to avoid a one-day international series loss in New Zealand.

The Southern Stars have won the toss and will bowl in the second ODI in Mount Maunganui as they look to avoid their first Rose Bowl series defeat to the White Ferns in amost two decades.

New Zealand have entered Thursday's ODI with a 1-0 series lead following a five-wicket win over the Southern Stars in Auckland on Sunday.

All-rounder Perry and batter Blackwell have regained fitness after missing the first ODI due to a hamstring injury.

Spin-bowling all-rounder Ashleigh Gardner has been given the nod after becoming the first indigenous player in an Australian women's team since 1958 when she made her Twenty20 international debut against the Kiwis in February.

Medium-pacer Rene Farrell also comes in, with Rachael Haynes, Megan Schutt, Kristen Beams and Lauren Cheatle making way.
