State Highway 1 north of Wellington has reopened after being closed for much of the day following a fatal crash near Waikanae.

The driver of a car was killed in a collision with a truck on the highway north of Waikanae about 6.30am.

The truck driver suffered minor injuries in the crash near Greenhill Rd.

At about 2pm the Transport Agency advised the road between Te Moana Road and Peka Peka had reopened.

"Emergency services and our contractors are now clear of the crash site, which means that we can open the road again," says Mark Owen, the agency's regional performance manager.

"We expect that there may be some delays as the congestion from the detour route clears, but we anticipate that traffic will shortly return to normal patterns for a Friday afternoon. We ask that motorists continue to be patient if they do experience any delays."

The major accident came at the start of the school holidays when there is expected to be heavy traffic heading out of Wellington.
