Statham and Tearney fell to the combination of Britain's Dominic Inglot and Romanian Florin Mergea 7-5 7-5 in Auckland on Wednesday.

Statham now turns his attention to the singles, having replaced top-seeded Spaniard Robert Bautista Agut in the main draw.

Bautista Agut, the defending champion, had to pull out because of a stomach virus.

Statham was given the vacancy as a "lucky loser" from qualifying and will face 2015 champion Jiri Vesely of the Czech Republic in a second-round encounter later on Wednesday.

Two other New Zealanders - Michael Venus and Artem Sitak - are in doubles action in the evening and they will be on opposite sides of the net in a first-round clash.

Venus and Swedish partner Robert Lindstedt are the event's No.2 seeds and face Sitak and American Nicholas Monroe.
