Stats New Zealand staff rehoused

Statistics NZ has found temporary office space for all of its Wellington staff and says reports Statistics House is to be demolished are false.

Statistics House, the building it leases on Wellington's waterfront has been closed since sustaining damage during the November 14 magnitude 7.8 quake, surprising many because it was a fairly new building.

On Friday the government department said it has agreed to lease three floors in Westpac House on Lambton Quay, its second temporary premises in Wellington, following the closure of Statistics House.

Westpac House was built in the mid-1970s and is 100 per cent of building code.

On Monday, about 80 Statistics NZ staff moved into temporary offices in HP House on Gilmer Terrace, which is also 100 per cent of code and more will follow. Westpac House is directly behind HP House.

Most staff will move by Christmas as the offices are fitted out. Statistics NZ isn't commenting on the cost.

"Between Westpac House and the five floors we will be occupying in HP House on Gilmer Terrace, there will be enough space for both Statistics NZ and the Ministry of Transport, which had been occupying a floor in Statistics House," says Government Statistician Liz MacPherson.

She says media reports that Statistics House is to be demolished are false.

With a government inquiry announced and engineering reports under way, the reality is that we have no idea what the future holds for Statistics House, she says.

Staff have been working from home or other temporary workspaces in the past fortnight.
