As Cyclone Cook starts lashing the country, the government is urging people to stay safe and out of the wild weather if they can.

"Just take real care, think about your travelling, look after yourself and your loved ones," said Deputy Prime Minister Paula Bennett.

"Just watch those roads, watch other drivers, because this is a time to drive to the conditions - and if you don't have to be out in the weather, don't be."

The Defence Force has 500 personnel as well as aircraft and trucks on standby.

"If we need it, we have people to deploy," Ms Bennett said.

"We're here to help communities who need it."
