With Guy Fawkes Day approaching, police are reminding people with fireworks to enjoy them responsibly.

Fireworks go on sale on Wednesday for a four-day period, as stipulated by New Zealand law, culminating in the November 5 festivities.

They can be bought only by people 18 and over.

Police say they want members of the public to enjoy fireworks in a safe and responsible way, and to respect other people and property.

They say people should also check with local councils for bylaws preventing the letting off of fireworks in certain public areas.

* Read the fireworks' instructions and light in a wide-open area,

* Stay away from alcohol or drugs,

* Always let an adult light the fireworks,

* Keep a bucket of water or a hose handy,

* Leave dud fireworks alone,

* Consider others and put fireworks away after 10:30pm,

* Keep pets inside on Guy Fawkes Night.
