Leander Nordling, 66, was standing at the perfume department at Åhléns Mall when suddenly there was a loud bang, according to local media.

He said: "It sounded like a bomb that exploded and began to smoke heavily in through the main entrance."

Shoppers and staff inside the perfume department were made to take shelter in a storage room.

Another witness was in a nearby shoe shop on Queen Street when she heard the sounds of screams.

Jan Granroth said: "We stood inside a shoe store and we heard noise and so people start screaming."

Describing the sight as she looked out the shop window, Jan said she saw a truck "slam" into the wall.

She said: "I looked out of the store and I see a huge truck slam into the wall opposite."

Jan was then taken to an emergency exit from the store.

One witnesses, called Dimitris said the truck came out of nowhere.

They reportedly told the local news site: "I went to the main street when a big truck came out of nowhere.

"It got out of control. I saw at least two being run over.

"I ran as fast as I could from there."

Photographer Annevi Petersson was in one of the stores on Drottninggatan when she heard screaming coming from outside as the truck went passed.

She said: "I was in a store at Drootninggatan where the truck passed by.

"Had just stepped into a fitting room, heard the noise and the screams, I ran out and people laying on the street.

"I saw a woman had a partly severed foot. People screaming in panic."

"I saw people laying bloody on the street and got out of there."

An office worker, who asked not to be named, said: "I can see at least two bodies covered up outside my office window. I didn't see the incident or the truck.

"We are still stuck in the office and no one is leaving. Just heard that there is shooting going on at Fridhemsplan"

Twitter user Daniel Szirany was on a train in the Central Station of the city when the 'terror attack' occurred.

He tweeted a picture and said: "Crowd rushed up from the Central Station up on the platform and in the trains in panic. Everyone had to lie down on the floor. The trains were locked."

Aerial footage from the scene shows people running down a street as emergency crews rush to the scene as bodies were covered with blankets in the road.

Dagen Nyheter, a journalist who was there, spoke to Sky news and said there are unconfirmed reports that the truck first drove into pedestrianised area then into the dept store.

Flames and smoke could be seen billowing from the crash site.

Local news site Aftonbladet reported the truck was stolen from its original driver during a restaurant delivery and one person has been arrested.
