A stolen WorkSafe ute struck two other vehicles and drove through wet concrete in Hastings before it was stopped, police say.

Road workers spotted the ute, which had been taken from an address overnight, on Middle Road just before midday on Thursday and notified police.

The ute driver failed to stop for officers and went on to crash into the back of a stationary vehicle stopped at traffic lights, says Senior Sergeant Mike Stevenson.

It then went over a large amount of wet concrete at road works, causing significant damage.

After cutting a corner at the intersection of Chatham Road and Walton Way, it crashed head-on into a car.

The collision was at low speed and no one was injured, Sen Sgt Stevenson said.

The ute was later seen driving along Flaxmere Road and a police unit stopped it with road spikes.

The alleged offender ran from the scene and was arrested a short time later.

A search of the ute recovered stolen items from another burglary in Havelock North sometime during the day, Sen Sgt Stevenson said.

A 20-year-old man is due in Hastings District Court on Friday facing a number of charges.
