NOTABLE STOUSHES OVER FLUORIDE IN WATER SUPPLIES

HAMILTON CITY COUNCIL

* Fluoride first added to Hamilton's water supply in 1966

* Council vote in 2013 to stop fluoridation

* A referendum following that decision showed 70 per cent of voters backed fluoridation

* Council reintroduced fluoride to the water supply in 2014 - anti-fluoride group Safe Water Alternative NZ failed to get an interim injunction in court to stop it

WHAKATANE DISTRICT COUNCIL

* In a narrow vote in January, the council voted to stop adding fluoride to the water supply, despite voters opting to continue with fluoridation in a referendum

* A little over a week later the council flip-flopped and voted to begin fluoridating the water again

SOUTH TARANAKI DISTRICT COUNCIL

* The council decided in 2012 to add fluoride to water supplies in Patea and Waverly

* Anti-fluoride lobby group New Health went to court to challenge the council's legal authority to make the decision

* A High Court decision in 2013 rejected New Health's legal bid, saying councils have implied power to fluoridate in the Local Government Act.
