An Air Force Hercules has landed safely at Auckland's Whenuapai Air Base after reporting loss of cabin pressure and smoke in the cockpit.

The C-130 landed at 11.30am on Wednesday with 17 people on board, a Fire Service spokesman says.

The Hercules crew had reported loss of cabin pressure and was flying at low altitude just prior to the landing, while dumping fuel.

There were also reports of smoke in the cockpit.

About seven fire engines were at the air base and had been briefed to expect a full emergency.
