Strong growth in the regions: Bridges

The latest GDP data shows 12 of New Zealand's 15 regions grew strongly in the year to March 2016, says Economic Development Minister Simon Bridges.

Bay of Plenty was top of the table at 7.7 per cent, following by Auckland (six per cent) and Otago (4.8 per cent).

Waikato, Wellington, Canterbury and Manawatu-Whanganui grew by more than three per cent.

Decreases were recorded in the three regions most affected by the dairy downturn and the drop off in mining and oil and gas industries - Taranaki, West Coast and Southland.

Despite that, Taranaki retained the highest GDP per capita in the country, followed by Wellington and Auckland.
