A strong 5.0-magnitude earthquake has struck Taranaki, with hundreds of people reporting feeling the tremor but no reports of damage as yet.

The quake struck just off the coast, 14km northwest of Opunake, at a depth of 19km just before 6am on Tuesday, GeoNet says.

It was initially recorded as 5.2 but that was later revised down.

More than 2000 people reported feeling it, with 82 around Taranaki saying it was strong.

Five people reported it was either severe or extreme, which is the category where buildings are damaged.

However, 15 minutes after the tremor both the Fire Service and police say they have had no reports of damage or other incidents from the quake.

It was felt as far away as Wellington and the top of the South Island.
