Two strong earthquakes have rattled the centre of the country.

A magnitude-4.8 tremor struck the bottom tip of the North Island at about 11pm on Sunday at a depth of 14 kilometres - with more than 2600 people across Wellington and Nelson feeling it, according to Geonet.

Half an hour later, a magnitude-4.5 quake struck in the Cook Strait at a depth of 13km.

More than 6000 people reported feeling it from Palmerston North to Abel Tasman National Park.

Geonet described the intensity of both quakes as "strong".
