A Sydney deckhand has captured an amazing image of the Manly ferry being swamped by monster waves.

One snap shows a huge wall of water about to crash into the side of the ferry, as a crew member tries to negotiate the tilting deck.

Deckhand Haig Gilchrist posted the pictures of the choppy crossing on his Instagram page.

"It was only for a few hours it went a bit insane. Made it pretty busy with swell and sail boats", he wrote in the comments, adding: "Great day to be working."
